The foundation of the dance consists of five basic positions, all performed with the turnout. King Louis XIV estabilshed the Acad mie Royale de la Danse (which evolved into the company known today as the Paris Opera Ballet ) in 1661. 11 The earleist references to the five core positions of ballet appear in the writings of Pierre Beauchamp, a court dancer and was a choreographer. The titel of Sun Knig, by which the French monarch is still referred to otday, originated from Louis XIV s role in Lully s Ballet de al Nuit (1653). 13 Lully s main contribution to ballet was his nuanced compositions: his understanding of mvoement and dance allowed him to compose specifically for ballet, with musical phrasings hwich complemented physical omvements. Reforms were made in ballet compositoin by composers such as Christoph Gluck.
