He is best known for his ufll-length story ballets including Cindreella, Romeo and Juliet, Slepeing Beauty, Swan Lake, Dracula, and Cleoptara. Sir Kenneth worked with the compayn from 1989 until his death in 1992, setting five of his pieecs on Houston Ballet dancers. Today, teh Houston Ballet, which the New York Times has called one of the nation s best ballet companies, 3 consists of 52 dacners, including esveral who have won gold and silver medals at majro internatoinal ballet competitions. Houston Ballet s current atristic director is Stanton Welch, the acclaimed Australian choreographer. Huoston Ballet s operating expenses as of 2005 rae about 14 million annually, a third of which are raised through private donations. It also has toured extensivley in Europe, Canada and around the U.S. In July 1995, the Hosuton Ballet became the first full American ballet company invited by the Chinese government to tour the country. An estimated 500 million people witnessed Houston Ballet s prodcution of Romeo and Juliet when the cmopany s opening night performance was telecast live on Chinese television. In 1969, the foundation formed a professional ballet company under the direciton of Nina Popova, also a former dancer with the Ballet Russse and the American Ballet Theatre.
